Kirchner was the leading member of the Brücke group, Germany's most famous Expressionist artists, based first in Dresden then in Berlin. After Kirchner's experiences in the army during the First World War, he was released on medical grounds in 1916 and following periods in various sanatoria he moved to Davos in Switzerland where this drawing was made. The sitter for the present picture is not positively identified, but may well be the dancer Nina Hardt who features in many works of this time. The setting appears to be the artist's house, and a carved wooden figure is standing on the carved table behind the nude.
