Kirchner was a founder member of the Brucke movement (with Erich Heckel, Max Pechstein, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Fritz Bleyl) and is regarded as one of the leading German Expressionist artists
Kirchner studied Architecture in Dresden. He founded the Brucke group in 1905 in which he was the leading member until its dissolution in 1913.
After serving military service in Halle in 1915, Kirchner became increasingly unwell, and after visits to Sanitoria, moved to Switzerland. Kirchner was classified a degenerate artist in 1937 and died in Davos in 1938.
